My homemade ranch dressing recipe is creamy, flavorful, and perfectly herby. It beats anything that you can buy at the store!

Homemade Ranch Dressing

If you love ranch dressing, you need to try this recipe! It’s made with simple ingredients and turns out incredibly creamy, fresh, and a little bit tangy.

Stop buying bottles of ranch from the store. This homemade dressing is the best, and it lasts in the fridge for a week! If you love cilantro, try my cilantro lime dressing, which uses this ranch as a base.

Key Ingredients

  • Sour Cream and Mayonnaise: This combo guarantees the best ranch dressing. The sour cream lightens up the mayonnaise, which can be heavy on its own. When I have homemade mayo in the fridge, I love using it to make this recipe.
  • Buttermilk or Milk: Buttermilk adds a tangy, creamy flavor that’s hard to beat. If you don’t have buttermilk, regular milk with a bit more lemon juice or vinegar also works. If you buy buttermilk for this recipe and have some leftover, try this buttermilk pancake recipe (I love them!).
  • Worcestershire: Not every ranch recipe calls for Worcestershire sauce, but let me tell you, it’s a game-changer in flavor. If you’re skeptical, taste the dressing, and then add a teaspoon of Worcestershire sauce to see how the flavor changes.
  • Lemon Juice or Vinegar: A splash of fresh lemon juice or white wine vinegar brightens the dressing in a way that store-bought bottles can’t compete with. It makes this dressing taste homemade.
  • Herbs: I love fresh dill, parsley, and chives for a classic ranch flavor, but dried herbs will work in a pinch. I have included tips for using dried herbs below the recipe.
  • Spices: Onion powder, garlic powder, salt, and pepper create that familiar ranch flavor. Dried onion and garlic powder taste better than fresh when making this ranch dressing.

How to Make the Ranch Dressing

Tip 1: Two ways to make it. This ranch is so simple to make at home. I know once you try it, you’ll be making it on repeat. You have two choices for making it:

  • By hand: Finely chop all your fresh herbs, then stir them into the other ranch dressing ingredients. Just a few seconds of stirring turns them into a creamy and delicious sauce.
  • Use a blender: The quickest way to make this recipe is to add all the ingredients to a blender, hit go, and wait 30 seconds. A food processor works, too!
Mixing ranch dressing ingredients together with fresh herbs

Tip 2: Make it ahead of time. Making homemade dressing every night of the week is not ideal. That’s why I am happy to say that this one lasts in the fridge for a week. The green of the herbs may dull slightly, but not much, and the dressing will still taste great.

Serving Suggestions

I can’t wait for you to make this dressing. I’m already using it for everything. It’s excellent for all my salads (especially this taco salad recipe), as a dip for fresh vegetables like celery, carrots, and broccoli, drizzled over roasted veggies, and served next to French fries or sweet potato fries.

It’s also amazing with anything with buffalo sauce, like buffalo chicken wings or these buffalo cauliflower wings. Happy cooking!

This homemade ranch dressing is extra creamy and perfect for tossing with salad or as a dipping sauce. We love using fresh herbs, but you can use dried herbs. See the tips section below for suggested amounts. I love buttermilk ranch dressing, so we use buttermilk to make this, but if you do not have any, regular milk still makes a delicious dressing. You will lose a little bit of tang, so consider adding a bit more lemon to make up for it. For another version of this, try our cilantro lime dressing (aka cilantro ranch).

Makes about 2 cups

Watch Us Make the Recipe

You Will Need

½ cup plus 2 tablespoons mayonnaise, try homemade mayonnaise (140g)

½ cup sour cream (113g)

½ cup buttermilk or regular milk (120ml)

1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice or white wine vinegar

1 to 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce, to taste

¼ cup fresh dill, finely chopped

¼ cup parsley, finely chopped

¼ cup fresh chives, finely chopped

½ teaspoon onion powder

½ teaspoon garlic powder

¼ teaspoon fine sea salt, plus more to taste

¼ teaspoon fresh ground black pepper

Directions

1Combine the mayonnaise, sour cream, buttermilk, lemon juice, and 1 teaspoon of Worcestershire sauce in a medium bowl and stir until well blended and creamy.

2Stir in the herbs, onion powder, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper. Taste and then adjust with another teaspoon of Worcestershire sauce or salt as needed. We love two teaspoons of Worcestershire sauce, but it has a strong flavor, so add this to your taste.

Adam and Joanne’s Tips

  • Storing: Store in an airtight container (like a jar), in the refrigerator for up to a week. You might lose some color and flavor from the fresh herbs the longer the dressing sits in the fridge.
  • Substituting dried herb: Dried herbs taste stronger than fresh, so use a third of the amount of fresh herbs suggested. You will need: 2 teaspoons each of dried dill, dried parsley, and dried chives.
  • Lighter dressing: For a lighter dressing with fewer calories, you can swap the mayonnaise for light mayo and the sour cream for plain Greek yogurt. The final flavor will be less rich and creamy, but still delicious.
  • Spicy ranch: Stir in finely minced jalapeño peppers (about 1 tablespoon). Or stir in 1 to 2 teaspoons of gochujang or sriracha. Try minced cowboy candy (pickled jalapeños) for a sweet and spicy ranch.

  • 🔥 Flavor Profile: Creamy, smoky, tangy, savory
  • 🧊 Meal-Prep Friendly: Keeps 3–4 days in the fridge
  • Best Served With: BBQ meats, grilled veggies, or as a standalone lunch

This is one of those pasta salads that actually feels like a full meal. You’ve got tender pasta coated in a creamy ranch dressing, smoky, crispy bacon, and juicy chicken that makes it extra satisfying. The little pops of freshness from tomatoes and green onions keep it from feeling too heavy.

What I really like about this version is the balance—it’s rich, yes, but not over-the-top. The ranch dressing has just enough tang to cut through the bacon and cheese, and chilling it gives everything time to come together properly (don’t skip that part). It’s the kind of dish that works just as well for meal prep as it does on a big sharing table.

What You’ll Need

Here is what you’ll need for this chicken bacon ranch pasta salad recipe. Find the full measurements in the recipe card below.

  • Pasta (rotini or bowtie): Holds onto the dressing nicely
  • Cooked chicken: Adds protein and makes it filling (rotisserie works great)
  • Bacon: Smoky, salty crunch, honestly, the backbone of flavor here. Use turkey bacon if preferred
  • Cheddar cheese: Adds richness and a sharp bite, you can also use freshly grated Parmesan. Try Monterey Jack or Colby for a milder cheese
  • Cherry tomatoes: Freshness and a little sweetness. Add peas or avocado for extra texture
  • Red onion: Sharpness to balance the creamy dressing
  • Green onions: Mild onion flavor and color

Creamy Ranch Dressing

  • Mayonnaise: Rich, creamy base. I use light mayonnaise, but you can also swap sour cream for Greek yogurt to lighten it up or use less of it.
  • Sour cream: Adds tang and lightens the mayo slightly, I typically use light sour cream.
  • Ranch seasoning: Herby, garlicky, classic ranch flavor; you can pick up a pack from most supermarkets.

How To Make Chicken Bacon Ranch Pasta Salad

Find the full recipe and nutritional information below. Here are some handy step-by-step photos for how to make this ranch pasta salad.

  • Cook pasta in salted water until al dente (don’t overcook!)
  • Drain and rinse under cold water to cool completely
  • Whisk together light mayo, light sour cream, and ranch seasoning
  • Add pasta, chicken, bacon, cheese, tomatoes, and onions
  • Toss until everything is well coated
  • Chill for at least 30–60 minutes
  • Stir, adjust seasoning, and serve

Recipe Tips

  • Rinse your pasta well after cooking: This stops cooking and keeps it from going gummy
  • Chill time matters: The flavor gets noticeably better after 30+ minutes
  • Even chopping: Small, even pieces = better bites every time
  • Tone down raw onion: Soak diced onion in cold water for 5–10 minutes
  • Make it saucier: Double the dressing if you like it extra creamy. Or reserve some dressing to stir through before serving
  • Storage: Store in an airtight container in the fridge for 3–4 days. Stir before serving—dressing thickens as it sits
  • Make-ahead: Make up to 24 hours ahead. Add a splash of milk or extra mayo before serving to refresh texture

Serving Suggestions

I usually serve this straight from the fridge, slightly chilled—it just tastes better that way. It’s perfect alongside grilled chicken, burgers, or anything off the BBQ.

If I’m being honest though, I’ve eaten this straight out of the container for lunch more times than I’d admit. It holds up well, fills you up, and doesn’t feel like “just a side.”

  • Add pasta, chicken, bacon, cheddar cheese, tomatoes, red onion, and green onions.

  • Toss until everything is evenly coated in the dressing.

  • Cover and refrigerate for at least 30–60 minutes.

  • Why does my pasta salad dry out? Pasta absorbs dressing as it sits. Just stir in a bit more mayo, sour cream, or a splash of milk before serving.
  • Can I make this ahead? Yes! Up to 24 hours ahead. Either toss with dressing just before serving, or refresh it with extra dressing.
  • Can I serve it warm? It’s best chilled or at room temp. Avoid leaving it out longer than 2 hours.
  • Flavor tip (from experience): Bacon really carries a lot of the flavor here. Cooking it fresh makes a noticeable difference—it adds that smoky, salty depth that ties everything together
